چکیده

Observations of the highest redshift clusters provide the longest lever arm in the attempt to evaluate the evolution of their bulk properties. I present the most recent results on galaxy cluster evolution based on data from the ROSAT North Ecliptic Pole survey. At z > 0.3 there is a deficit of clusters with respect to the local universe which is significant at > 4.7σ. The evolution appears to begin at L0.5−2.0 > 1.8×10 44 erg s in the NEP survey data and goes in the same direction as the original EMSS result. At lower redshifts there is no evidence for evolution, a result in agreement with all the existing cluster surveys.

The Warps Survey: Iii. the Discovery of an X-ray Luminous Galaxy Cluster at Z = 0.833 and the Evolution of X-ray Luminous Clusters

The Wide Angle ROSAT Pointed Survey (WARPS) reports the discovery of ClJ0152.7–1357, an X-ray luminous, rich cluster of galaxies at a redshift of z = 0.833. At LX = 8×10 44 h 50 erg s −1 (0.5−2.0 keV) ClJ0152.7–1357 is, together with MS1054.4–0321, the most X-ray luminous cluster known at redshifts z > 0.55. The high X-ray luminosity of the system suggests that massive clusters may begin to for...

A reanalysis of the X - ray luminosities of clusters of galaxies in the EMSS sample with 0 . 3 < z < 0 . 6 . S . C . Ellis

A reanalysis of the X-ray luminosities of clusters of galaxies in the EMSS sample with 0.3<z<0.6. ABSTRACT The X-ray luminosities of the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS) clusters of galaxies with redshifts 0.3< z <0.6 are remeasured using ROSAT PSPC data. It is found that the new luminosities are on average 1.18±0.08 times higher than previously measured but that this ratio de...

Evolution of the near-infrared luminosity function in rich galaxy clusters

We present the K-band (2.2 μ) luminosity functions of the X-ray luminous clusters MS1054−0321 (z = 0.823), MS0451−0305 (z = 0.55), Abell 963 (z = 0.206), Abell 665 (z = 0.182) and Abell 1795 (z = 0.063) down to absolute magnitudes MK = −20. Our measurements probe fainter absolute magnitudes than do any previous studies of the nearinfrared luminosity function of clusters. All the clusters are fo...

High redshift X – ray galaxy clusters . II . The L X − T relationship revisited

Aims. In this paper we re-visit the observational relation between X–ray luminosity and temperature for high-z galaxy clusters and compare it with the local L X –T and with theoretical models. Methods. To these ends we use a sample of 17 clusters extracted from the Chandra archive supplemented with additional clusters from the literature, either observed by Chandra or XMM–Newton, to form a fina...

X-ray Surveys of Distant Galaxy Clusters

I review recent observational progress in the search for and study of distant galaxy clusters in the X-ray band, with particular emphasis on the evolution of the abundance of X-ray clusters out to z ∼1. Several on-going deep X-ray surveys have led to the discovery of a sizeable population of clusters at z > 0.5 and have the sensitivity to detect clusters beyond redshift one. These surveys have ...
